Claude Builds My Grocery Cart Every Tuesday

Connect Instacart once and write the list once. After that a full cart is waiting for you every Tuesday morning.

September 2026 / 2 one-time setups

Written September 2026. Menus move, so if a button isn't exactly where I say it is, look nearby. The idea doesn't change.

Ok so my grocery list is the same 11 things every week because my toddler is a machine when it comes to eating bananas and sliced cheese. I've typed those 11 things into Instacart something like 200 times and the list has never once changed. I'm just the one typing it in.

So now Claude does it. Every Tuesday at 8:00 AM it searches my store and picks the products and builds the cart. Then it hands the cart to me and I pay. By the time I'm downstairs with both kids and a coffee the cart is sitting there done and all I have to do is look it over and hit checkout.

There are 2 setups and both of them are laptop jobs you only do once. You connect Instacart and then you put it on a schedule. I promise this is easier than it sounds.

Start here. Connect Instacart

Claude can't see a single shelf until you do this part.

The exact path:

  1. Go to claude.ai on a laptop.
  2. Click Customize in the left sidebar and then click Connectors. There's a second route if you'd rather: click the plus sign in the message box and hover over Connectors.
  3. Search for Instacart and click it.
  4. Click Connect. Instacart takes over and asks you to sign in to your account. Read that screen instead of clicking through it and then approve.

It takes 2 minutes and then you never think about it again.

What it can do and the one thing it can't

It finds stores near you and searches one store's shelves for what's actually in stock today. Then it puts stuff in your cart and the cart shows up right inside the chat with real prices on it.

Now the limit. Claude can't check out. There's no button for it so it can't place the order or charge your card even if you asked it to. It builds the cart and hands you the link and that's where it stops. You open the link and you pay.

Maybe you're picturing Claude buying $300 of groceries behind your back while you're at pickup and I get why. Can't happen. It's not switched on.

One more quirk that got me is that you can see the prices in that cart and Claude can't. They get drawn on your screen and never reach the model, so it can't go find you the cheapest oat milk no matter how nicely you ask. If you want that, ask it to search and show you options and then read the numbers yourself.

Build the cart by hand once before you schedule anything

Do it live one time before you schedule anything, because the first run is where you find out how picky you have to be and you want to learn that while you're sitting there watching.

Build me a cart at [store name] with:
bananas, sliced provolone, whole milk, strawberries.
Tell me what you picked for each one.

Then read what it picked and fix it. You only have to do this once.

The mistake that makes it fail is being vague about which version of a thing you want. I asked for cheddar and got shredded cheddar twice before I wrote SLICED in capital letters and it finally stopped. Same with milk, because "milk" gets you organic milk at my store and quite honestly I don't want to pay that price. Same with creamer. There are 9 Chobani creamers and I want exactly 1 of them 🙄

Write the fussy detail in. Capital letters aren't overkill here.

1 pack of SLICED mild cheddar cheese (sliced, NOT shredded)
1 gallon of whole milk, NOT organic
1 Chobani Sweet Cream creamer (Sweet Cream, NOT vanilla)

Now put it on a schedule

This is the part that gives you your Tuesday back.

The exact path:

  1. Click Scheduled in the left sidebar.
  2. Click New task. You get 2 choices. Create with Claude asks you questions and writes the task for you, while Set up manually just gives you the form. Manual is faster once you know what you want.
  3. Fill in Name. Mine says "Weekly Sprouts grocery cart" which is not creative and doesn't need to be.
  4. Paste your list into Instructions. My full prompt is below so steal it.
  5. Set Frequency to Weekly and a time box and a day box pop up next to it. Mine says 8:00 AM and Tuesday.
  6. Set Permissions to Automatically approve. More on that in a sec.
  7. Click Save.

About that Permissions setting. There are 3 choices and picking the wrong one is why people's tasks sit there doing nothing.

Scheduled tasks need a paid plan. That means Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise and not the free one. They also run remotely, which means your laptop can be shut in a drawer and the task still fires at 8:00 AM.

The instructions I actually use

Here's mine. It's live and it runs every week, so swap in your store and your list and you're most of the way there.

Build a weekly grocery cart on Instacart from [STORE]
for me, then send it to me to review and check out
myself. IMPORTANT: Do NOT place the order or check
out. Only build the cart and present it for approval.

Use the Instacart tools (search [STORE] for each item,
then add to cart). Store: [STORE].

Shopping list (fixed every week):
1. A bunch of regular (yellow) bananas
2. 1 pack of SLICED provolone cheese
3. 1 pack of SLICED mild cheddar (sliced, NOT shredded)
4. 1 gallon of whole milk, NOT organic
5. 1 Chobani Sweet Cream creamer (NOT vanilla)
6. Strawberries (1 container)

Preferences to respect:
- All cheese must be SLICED, never shredded.
- Milk must NOT be organic.

For each item, pick the closest match. When something
is out of stock or you had to choose a substitute or
make a judgment call on brand or size, say so clearly.

Deliver: the Instacart cart link, a short summary
listing each item with the exact product and size you
chose, and a clearly flagged list of anything out of
stock, substituted, or guessed at. Do not charge
anything or complete checkout.

A few lines in there are doing most of the work.

Naming the store twice. It's at the top and again in the tool line, because if you skip it the task wanders off to whatever store it used last.

Telling it in capital letters not to check out. It can't anyway. I put it in because I wanted to read it and stop thinking about it.

Asking it to flag the guesses. Stores run out of things and when it can't find your creamer you want to read that in the summary instead of finding out in the cart.

What Tuesday looks like now

Click Scheduled in the sidebar and then click your task and everything is on one page. There's an Active toggle for the week you're out of town and a Next run line with the exact date and time it fires again. History lists every past run and you can click into any of them. Instructions stays editable so adding an item takes 10 seconds. And Run now is there for the week you need it early.

My last 5 runs are sitting in that history. The cart gets built and Claude writes me a short list of what it picked and anything it had to swap. I open the link and pay. That's the grocery run now.

When it doesn't work

It shopped at the wrong store. You didn't name the store inside the instructions so it used whatever store your account touched last. Put the store name in twice and it stops.

It ran and the cart is empty. Permissions are on Manually approve, so it paused on the first action and waited for a human who was asleep. Open the task and switch it to Automatically approve.

Shredded cheese again. Your description isn't specific enough to beat the search results, so add the capitals and the NOT.

Half the produce is missing. That one is the store running out and berries sell out all the time. This is why the prompt asks it to flag substitutions, so you find out in the summary instead of at your front door.

The fastest path to a win

1. Connect Instacart. It takes 2 minutes on a laptop and nothing else works without it.

2. Build 1 cart by hand and argue with it until the products are right.

3. Paste the fixed list into a scheduled task and set it to Weekly with your day and your time.

4. Set Permissions to Automatically approve or it just sits there waiting on you.

5. Let it run for 1 week before you trust it, then read the summary and fix the 2 things it got wrong.

If you only do one thing: write the fussy details into the list. Sliced not shredded. Not organic. Sweet cream not vanilla. Skip that and you're rebuilding the cart by hand every week.
